Philosophy
“I used to feel guilty every time I left to run. Now I know that run is what makes me the dad and husband I want to be. That shift changed everything.

Sound familiar?

Wherever you're
starting from,
you belong here.

  • 01 You've never really run before and every plan online assumes you already do.
  • 02 You used to run and life got in the way. The guilt of stopping feels heavier than starting again.
  • 03 You want to chase something big, a 5K, a half, maybe even an ultra, but struggle to fit training into family life.
  • 04 You know movement would help your mood, stress, and sleep. You just need somewhere to start.
  • 05 You just have questions and don't know who to ask. Reach out, no commitment needed.

Running isn’t something you earn the right to do once the kids are asleep and the house is clean. It’s something that makes you better at all of it.

Ryan Kirwan, Building Balance

The Process

Simple. Honest.
Built for real life.

No rigid programs. No punishing schedules. Just coaching that adapts to your week, whatever that week looks like.

01

We start with your life

Before any plan, we talk about what your week actually looks like: kids’ schedules, work, sleep, and stress. Your plan is built around you, not the other way around.

02

You get a plan that fits

Short, consistent sessions over long, unsustainable ones. Progressive, not punishing. Three runs a week beats one heroic one. We build habits, not just fitness.

03

We stay in it together

Weekly check-ins, plan adjustments when life shifts, honest accountability. When the week falls apart, we adapt. This isn’t a rigid program. It’s coaching.

Programs

No matter where you start.

About Ryan

A coach who knows what it's like
to be that parent.

I’m Ryan, a running coach, ultra marathoner, and dad based in Adelaide, coaching parents online Australia-wide. I know what it’s like to want to train and feel like everything else comes first.

I started Building Balance because I couldn’t find coaching that actually understood the reality of fitting running into family life. Every plan assumed you had unlimited time, consistent energy, and nobody depending on you.

That’s not real life. So I built something that is. Coaching rooted in flexibility, honesty, and the belief that showing up consistently, even imperfectly, beats burning out every time.

Questions parents ask

Before you lace up.

How do I start running again after having a baby?

Gently, and with walk breaks. Short walk/jog intervals two to three times a week, building gradually, is the safest and most effective way back. It’s exactly what the free 4-week starter plan walks you through. If you’re postpartum, get the all-clear from your GP or a women’s health physio first.

How many runs a week do I actually need?

Three. Three consistent 20 to 30 minute sessions beat one heroic weekend run every time. Everything here is built around three realistic windows a week, because that’s what parent life allows.

I’ve never run before. Is this still for me?

Yes. You don’t need a running history to start. Every plan is built from where you are today, whether that’s your first ever jog or your first in ten years.

How much does running coaching cost?

The 4-week starter plan is free. The 12-Week Balance Reset is $150 per month, and fully personalised 1:1 Personal Coaching is $190 per month at the launch rate. No lock-in contracts.

What happens when my week falls apart and I miss sessions?

The plan adapts. Sick kids, broken sleep and work chaos aren’t failures. They’re the design brief. We adjust the week and keep going. That’s the difference between coaching and a PDF.
